Curriculum
2-12 weeks’ curriculum
The program is designed to provide advanced clinical training in all major aspects of head and
neck surgery. The fellowship is based at the Division of Head and Neck surgery which is part of
the Otorhinolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery Department founded in 1894, and is one of
the biggest departments in South-eastern Europe. With four operating theaters, and hospital 66
beds, we preform 300+ major head and neck surgical resections per year, including 60
microvascular flaps, 500+ thyroid surgeries, 70+ salivary gland surgeries and 20+ facial
paralysis surgeries.
Fellows will be supported to settle down into their new environment (find appropriate
accommodation and local amenities). We will arrange an initial meeting and feedback meetings
with the fellow to discuss the objectives of the training as well as informal and social networking
opportunities.
The fellow will be fully involved with all activities of the Department. They will be also able to
observe clinical work of the faculty members of the Department.
The fellow will be given the opportunity to actively participate in group meetings and other
academic activities within the Department, including attending workshops, conferences, etc.
Throughout the training, any particular challenges or specific requests of a fellow will be fully
considered to ensure a responsive, relevant and adequate training plan is developed for them.

This program allows Merit Applications. This program allows merit-based applications for virtual and onsite clinical and research programs. If you are successfully awarded under this category, Trialect or the host mentor will cover the tuition fee only. All applications will be evaluated based on merit. Due to the high level of competition, the chances of being selected under the merit category are quite limited.

I had a great learning experience during my "Head and Neck and Microvascular surgical" fellowship during the period October-December, 2022 at UHC Sestre Milosrdnice, Croatia. I was able to observe and assist in a wide spectrum of Head and Neck Onco-surgical cases. In spite of a very busy schedule, the entire onco-surgical team and especially Dr Solter was always proactive to explain and answer most of my queries and allowed me to understand the complex nuances of oncological surgery. Within a very short period of a week, I was very comfortable interacting with the consultants, residents and other staff. I got a chance to actively assist in various resection procedures including oral and oropharyngeal cancer resection, partial and total glossectomy, nasal and paranasal sinus cancer resection with orbital exenteration, endoscopic and open laryngeal cancer resection, total laryngopharyngectomy, advanced skin cancer resection, neck dissections, parotid and thyroid surgeries etc. I also actively assisted in various reconstructive procedures including antero-lateral thigh flap, osseocutaneous and chimeric fibular flap, latissimus dorsi flap and subscapular artery chimeric flap. Apart from Onco-surgical cases, I was fortunate to get a wider experience and a chance to assist in facial plastics including primary and revision rhinoplasty, otoplasty, bhlepharoplasty, microtia surgery, minimal invasive temporalis tendon transfer for facial paralysis and upper eyelid gold implantation. Additionally, I had extensive exposure to a wider spectrum of conventional ENT cases with very dedicated and learned faculty who were very kind and answered all my questions. I highly recommend this fellowship to young Otolaryngologist and Head & Neck surgeons around the globe who plan to pursue their career in head and neck oncosurgery. Apart from a great learning experience, this traineeship will allow the fellow to explore the beautiful county and its diverse heritage, culture and gastronomy.
May be in term of English language usage, because most of time during the surgery, local Croatian language is used, so you need to ask questions frequently if you want to follow the cases and their surgery. It has been a great experience that I had during my traineeship in Head and Neck Microvascular Surgery at University Hospital Sestre Milorsdnice, Zagreb, Croatia. The coordinator Dr Andro Kosec and Head and Neck Team (especially Dr Solter) who are very helpful and extremely responsive during my 2 weeks of stay at the center. The teaching is great with the running of 6 OT rooms every day, allotted for the ORL-HNS Department. The staff nurses also are very friendly and easy to reach if there is any issue to settle. This center is highly recommended for a fellowship training in 'Otorhinolaryngology- Head and Neck Surgery.
