Covid-19 Variants and Virus-Cell Interactions

Laboratory of Molecular Biology, University of Verona;
(5/5) - 1 reviews

Host Institution: University of Verona

Main Areas of Interest

Our laboratory focuses on the following research topics:

  • Study of the interactions between viruses and host (i.e., HIV-1, HTLV-1 and -2, etc.).
  • Study of the role of viral infections and MHC-I variants in the development of neurodegenerative diseases (i.e., Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases).
  • In addition, we have several open collaborations with local, national and internationallaboratories, to apply the new CRISPR/Cas9 technology to research in cancer (melanoma, pancreatic cancer, etc.) and neurologic diseases (AD, PD, etc.).

Specifically, we have developed assay systems based on pseudovirus production to test the ability of sera from vaccinated people to neutralize different CoV-2 variants, as well as sera from animal models vaccinated with novel immunogens.

If any young researchers enrolled in the program are interested in learning the use of viral vectors and pseudoviruses, we can accept them starting in September."

Since we are a molecular and cellular biology laboratory, we currently use the following techniques:

  • Genome editing, using CRISPR/Cas9
  • RNA interference
  • Cell cultures, transfections, nucleofections
  • Immunofluorescence, immunohistochemistry, confocal microscopy, cytofluorimetry, cell sorting (FACS), Bimolecular Fluorescence Complementation, etc.
  • Basic molecular biology techniques (gene cloning, blots, PCR, sequencing, etc.).
  •

Can be customized

Our laboratory has a long-time experience in hosting and training students, PhD students, and PhD fellows.

This program allows Merit Applications. This program allows merit-based applications for virtual and onsite clinical and research programs. If you are successfully awarded under this category, Trialect or the host mentor will cover the tuition fee only. All applications will be evaluated based on merit. Due to the high level of competition, the chances of being selected under the merit category are quite limited.

I have been worked as a clinician in my country and I joined to this training program because of I wanted to participate a PhD program. Although I had a microbiology laboratory and cell culture experience, I had not confident about practice and I had no idea how I use some applications in an research. This training was meet to my expectations. Prof. Donato ZIPETO and his team were very supportive as from first day. They tried to best to explained me about their research. There were three different project what are continue and I observed them in the first weeks. I mostly focused two of them in order to learn deeply in terms of my field which is the Infectious Diseases and Clinical Microbiology. I have learnt CRISPR-Cas9 primer design, selection of single colony, DNA extraction and some other technics from Mauro VOI (PhD) and Ali DEZHGIR (MSc). Tobia FANTONİ (PhD) supervised me in most of practical applications and He spent incredible effort to teach me about his experiment steps until last day. His research project is related COVID variant and neutralisation assays. He taught me producing pseudovirus(PV), harvesting of PV, titration and neutralisation steps. I had a opportunity to apply all of this steps on his supervise. I also joined some steps of Michele BISSORI(PhD)' s experiment. I would like to thank you all team for the friendly and supportive manner. I guess that this experience would be cornerstone about my future career preferences.
