Fellows will receive comprehensive support to acclimate to their new environment, including assistance with finding suitable accommodation and local amenities, and registration at the University, where they will be issued an ID card. A desk space will be allocated to each fellow. A full induction covering safety, laboratory practices, and personal welfare will be conducted by the University's designated staff and myself.
I will schedule an initial meeting with the fellow to discuss the objectives of the training and the expected mechanisms for their fulfillment. We will then develop experimental plans with realistic timelines.
Fellows will receive thorough training to conduct each experiment and will be allowed to independently perform the experiments under supervision during their initial attempts. They will have the opportunity to engage with me and other laboratory members to discuss any aspect of laboratory operations or to seek clarification on specific protocols. Training will also be provided on how to analyze and interpret their data. Regular meetings, either weekly or bi-weekly, will be arranged to discuss their progress, reflect on findings, and plan subsequent experiments. Fellows are expected to maintain accurate and comprehensive records of their work in the laboratory books provided.
Fellows will also have the opportunity to participate in research group meetings and other academic activities within the School and the University. This includes attending bespoke workshops tailored to research career development, such as manuscript writing, grant writing, and networking. Additionally, they will be encouraged to orally present their work at least once in a research group meeting before the conclusion of their visit.
Toward the end of the training, I will meet with the fellow to discuss plans for publishing their work, if sufficient data has been collected, or for disseminating their findings at future conferences. They will be guided in identifying global or local opportunities for which the training has prepared them, enhancing their competitiveness and integration of the skills and knowledge acquired into their ongoing research or professional roles.
Throughout the training, any particular challenges or specific requests from the fellows will be fully considered to ensure that a responsive, relevant, and adequately structured training plan is developed.
