Our group is currentl working on drug doscovery against parasitic protozoa diseases. Interested people could get trained in in vitro and in vivo assays as well as PCD evaluation. Moreover other techniques and methods are used day by day in our institution.
The Principal Investigator (PI), Jacob Lorenzo Morales, has dedicated over a decade to studying free-living amoebae (FLA), with a primary focus on the Acanthamoeba genus. His research aims to identify potential therapeutic targets using siRNA to develop novel treatments against this pathogen. His work extends to other FLAs, such as Balamuthia mandrillaris, Sappinia, and Naegleria fowleri, all of which can cause fatal encephalitis in humans and animals.
In recent years, Dr. Morales has also contributed to the diagnosis of SARS-CoV-2 and the development of novel antiviral devices and agents. With over 15 years of experience in diagnosing and treating tropical diseases and emerging pathogens, Dr. Morales boasts an h-index of 41, with more than 6800 citations, including over 3900 citations since 2019. He has published over 250 articles in JCR-indexed journals within Tropical Medicine, Parasitology, and Protozoology, and has presented more than 300 communications at national and international conferences.
Dr. Morales has organized international congresses and workshops on free-living amoebae and has reviewed international grants and over 250 manuscripts for journals like PLOS Neglected Tropical Diseases and Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy. His accolades include the "Joven Canarias 2013" individual prize, the second prize in the 2015 "Premios Talento y Compromiso de Cajasiete," and the 2020 Internationalization award from the University of La Laguna. He played a significant role in the Acanthamoeba genome project, with the data published in Genome Biology in 2013, cited over 300 times. Dr. Morales has supervised 21 PhD theses and 20 Master's theses.
