Lecturing and Teaching:
This Traineeship is designed for healthcare providers (e.g., physicians, nurses) and researchers who want to conduct research in real-world clinical settings.
Dr. Eugenia Socías, MD, MSc, is a Research Scientist with the BC Centre on Substance Use and an Assistant Professor in the Division of AIDS, Department of Medicine at the University of British Columbia.
With a background in infectious diseases and addiction medicine, Dr. Socías’ research interests focus on health services and clinical research in substance use, HIV, and HCV, particularly as they relate to the optimization of health care delivery. She has over eight years of experience in conducting observational and interventional research in HIV, HCV, and addiction medicine, and with vulnerable populations.
Dr. Socías is the Principal Investigator of: (1) OPTIMA, CRISM’s first national RCT comparing the effectiveness of methadone and buprenorphine/naloxone models of care, and (2) a new RCT evaluating the potential of slow-release oral morphine for the treatment of opioid use disorder.
Her work is supported by a Michael Smith Foundation for Health Research/St. Paul’s Foundation Scholar Award.

Tasks and Timeline:
Module 1: Clinical research basics
This module will provide an overview of clinical research, including different designs, and research process.
Module 2: Ethics in clinical research
In this module, we will learn about ethical considerations when doing research with human subjects, including specific considerations when working with vulnerable populations.
Module 3: Practice-based research
This module aims to provide an overview of practice-based research, and how it can help close the gap between recommended and actual care to improve patients’ health.
Module 4: Pragmatic clinical trials
In this module, we will learn about pragmatic clinical trials, its differences with explanatory trials, and their potential to inform policy and practice
Module 5: Key considerations to design a protocol for a (pragmatic) clinical trial
In this module, we will examine the basic elements that need to be considered when designing a pragmatic clinical trial
Module 6: Choosing appropriate and meaningful outcomes
In this module, we will learn about the importance of choosing relevant outcomes to various stakeholders, and choosing the right measurements

This program allows Merit Applications. This program allows merit-based applications for virtual and onsite clinical and research programs. If you are successfully awarded under this category, Trialect or the host mentor will cover the tuition fee only. All applications will be evaluated based on merit.
