Cardiac Research (preclinical)

Brody School of Medicine, East Carolina University

This program offers intensive research training (6-12 weeks) on experimental models of cardiovascular research, including advanced in vitro and rodent in vivo models. Our main research areas are myocardial regeneration, cardiac remodeling, and cardiac ischemic injury.

Main Areas of Interest

  • Myocardial regeneration
  • Improving systolic function after myocardial infarction through cardiac remodeling
  • Inflammation-fibrosis crosstalk
  • Advanced cell culture techniques
  • Molecular and Cell biology
  • Proteomics and genomics
  • Microscopy
  • Rodent surgical models

Program Options:

  • Intensive Research Training (6-12 Weeks): For a comprehensive and immersive experience in research techniques. This program provides extensive hands-on training, allowing for deep involvement in our research areas and experimental techniques.

Main Research Areas:

  • Myocardial regeneration: Explore the cellular basis of myocardial regeneration, including testing new protocols to promote adult cardiomyocyte proliferation and regenerative pathways signaling between matrix and cardiac cells.
  • Improving systolic function post-myocardial infarction (MI): Test different potential therapeutics to improve myocardial remodeling post-MI to maintain cardiac contractility and function.
  • Inflammation driven cardiac remodeling: Study crosstalk between immune cells and cardiac fibroblasts and the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying the axis of inflammation and fibrosis in several models of cardiac disease.

Techniques and Skills Development:

  • Advanced Cell Culture Techniques: Gain hands-on experience in 2D and 3D cell culture using various cell types, including myocytes, cardiac fibroblasts, endothelial cells, and pericytes.
  • Molecular and Cellular Biology: Master techniques such as gene silencing, overexpression, cell viability/toxicity assays, cell migration, angiogenesis and chemotaxis assays.
  • Proteomics: Learn and apply different proteomic approaches, such as immunoblotting, ELISA, immunoprecipitation, and mass spectrometry.
  • Genetic Analysis: Conduct real-time quantitative PCR and bulk RNA sequencing
  • Immunological and Microscopy Techniques: Develop skills in flow cytometry, fluorescence/light microscopy, and immunohistochemistry.
  • Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) Mouse Models: Experience handling mice and performing mouse surgeries (time-permitting) for various CVD models, such as pressure overload and ischemic injury.

6-12 Weeks Intensive Training:

  • Induction and Orientation: Receive a comprehensive induction covering laboratory safety, lab protocols, and robust record keeping. Obtain university ID, email, and certificate for chemical hygiene plan training. If applicable, attend and pass animal handling and surgical technique classes.
  • Curriculum Customization: Engage in initial discussions to tailor the training objectives and experimental plans to your interests and goals.
  • Hands-On Training and Supervision: Receive direct training and supervision in conducting experiments, with opportunities for independent practice.
  • Regular Progress Meetings: Participate in weekly or bi-weekly meetings to assess progress and plan future experiments.
  • Research Integration and Record Keeping: Keep detailed work records; collect, analyze, and interpret data; and integrate findings into broader research objectives.

Academic and Professional Development:

  • Research Group Involvement: Join research group meetings and engage in academic activities within the Brody Medical School and East Carolina University.
  • Seminars: Attend scientific seminars and seminars/workshops on research career development topics such as manuscript writing, grant writing, and networking.
  • Presentation Opportunities: Present your research findings in group meetings and prepare for potential publication or conference dissemination.
  • Career Planning: Discuss future opportunities and strategies for integrating new skills into your professional practice.

Additional Information:

This program has the following durations available:

Duration Fee
12 weeks $2,750.00
6 weeks $1,500.00

This program allows Merit Applications. This program allows merit-based applications for virtual and onsite clinical and research programs. If you are successfully awarded under this category, Trialect or the host mentor will cover the tuition fee only. All applications will be evaluated based on merit. Due to the high level of competition, the chances of being selected under the merit category are quite limited.
