About the Host Mentor

Marc A.M.J. van Zandvoort is a full professor at Maastricht University in the Department of Molecular Cell Biology within the Faculty of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences. He also holds a personal chair in Genetics and Cell Biology and is affiliated with the GROW School for Oncology and Reproduction.

Prof. van Zandvoort's research focuses on advanced optical microscopy techniques such as multi-photon microscopy, high-resolution 3D-STED microscopy, and spectral microscopy. These techniques are applied to various biomedical fields, particularly in cardiovascular and oncological research. For instance, his team developed a method to measure the functionality of carotid plaque microvessels in mice using in vivo multi-photon microscopy. Additionally, he has conducted numerous studies involving bimodal imaging, such as combining optical techniques with MRI and ultrasound.

He is actively involved in several professional organizations, serving as a board member of the Dutch Society of Microscopy, the NL-BioImaging-AM initiative, and the conference series Focus on Microscopy. He also leads the EuroBioImaging Node Maastricht.

Prof. van Zandvoort is an experienced educator, mentoring and tutoring students from various disciplines, including medicine, biomedical engineering, and science. His research group includes technicians, PhD students, and postdoctoral researchers based in Maastricht and Aachen.

Although I could follow the students' projects and learn in practice about the techniques, I think it would be best if there were exclusive prepared samples for the traineeship. I stayed for 6 weeks at University of Maastricht for the Advanced Optical Microscopy in Biomedical Research. The professors/mentor hosts that give the traineeship have a lot of experience and knowledge about microscopy, they were friendly, helpful and open to feedback. I was able to follow the students' projects, learn the routine of the research group and experience real life problems and solutions that one could encounter in this field of research. I enjoyed my time at the University of Maastricht, all the staff were super helpful, and I was able to meet very talented researchers and students. I already had some experience with microscopy, but after this traineeship I’ll be much more confident to decide which technique to use in my nexts projects, and I think that is the most valuable lesson that I learned from this course. Overall I think it was a very positive experience that met my expectations. I was very well received by the mentor host research group. I felt part of their team for these 6 weeks. I also had the opportunity to use high-end equipment that I don’t have access to in my local region. The Netherlands and especially the city of Maastricht were very pleasant and definitely will be missed. Although I could follow the students' projects and learn in practice about the techniques, I think it would be best if there were exclusive prepared samples for the traineeship.
