Around the world, people affected by the disease are in search of solutions for Type 1 Diabetes, looking towards bold and bright scientists like you for answers. We facilitate connections between donors and scientists making it easier to secure funding.
Applicants should pay close attention to the following “key requirements”:
🧪 1. Early-Career Investigator Focus
Applicants are typically new investigators, including postdoctoral fellows, instructors, or early-stage assistant professors.
No significant prior independent research funding (e.g., no R01).
📚 2. Relevant T1D Research Experience
Prior publications or pilot studies in Type 1 diabetes — particularly in areas like:
Beta-cell regeneration
Immunotherapy or immune tolerance
Artificial pancreas technologies
Biomarker discovery
Demonstrated commitment to a career in T1D research.
💡 3. Innovative and High-Impact Proposals
Novel hypotheses or approaches that traditional funders might consider too early-stage or high-risk.
Projects with potential for clinical relevance or future translational impact.
Research ideas that address critical knowledge gaps in T1D.
🧬 4. Strong Scientific Rationale and Feasibility
A well-articulated research plan with clear aims, methods, and preliminary data (if available).
A strong statement of how funding will advance the investigator’s career and scientific goals.
🤝 5. Community Engagement & Crowdfunding Appeal
DRC includes a public review process; researchers must explain their project to both scientific reviewers and the general public.
Projects that are easy to communicate and engage donors tend to do well.
Ability to create public-facing project summaries, videos, and updates helps attract community support.
🏛 6. Institutional Support
Affiliation with an academic or research institution.
Strong letters of recommendation from mentors or department heads.
Access to core facilities and support infrastructure.
🔍 Notes:
Grants are typically $50,000 USD for one year.
Emphasis is placed on transparency, donor engagement, and investigator development.
DRC funding can often serve as a launchpad for NIH, JDRF, or Helmsley Trust grants later.
Your research must focus on Type 1 Diabetes, and you should not have received significant NIH funding as a Principal Investigator (PI).
Applicants must adhere to all the key requirements in the application process, content, format, requirements and deadline.
