A $5,000 one-time award to a predoctoral student.
The applications will be reviewed by a selection committee appointed by the AAP Foundation President. Applicants will receive news about their application status within a month of their deadline.
The Patty & Paul Levi Research Award provides an annual $5,000 award to a predoctoral student or students doing research related to preventative periodontology and being mentored by a periodontal faculty member.
The research project must be completed by a predoctoral student or students with the periodontal faculty mentor as principal investigator. A postdoctoral periodontal resident may be part of the team.
The research should be associated with prevention of periodontal or peri-implant diseases. Prevention can be defined broadly to include epidemiologic studies, studies involving teaching non-surgical periodontology to undergraduate students especially in the first year of their dental school training, non-surgical periodontal therapy, or providing information about periodontal diseases to the public especially to students.
Levi Research Awardees are expected to submit their research to the American Academy of Periodontology requesting inclusion in the AAP Annual Meeting Program.
Patty Levi has supported Paul for nearly fifty years in his endeavor to teach and practice periodontology. After they were married Paul entered the post-doctoral periodontal program Tufts University School of Dental Medicine (TUSDM). They moved to Burlington, Vermont where Paul taught at the University of Vermont Dental Hygiene School for 27 years. Paul then began teaching at the Harvard School of Dental Medicine, and he and Patty would drive to Boston for two days. After nine years of teaching at Harvard, Paul accepted a half-time position at TUSDM, while still teaching several days a year at Harvard. They are very honored to have this named award and feel strongly that it will enhance the knowledge of preventive dentistry and periodontology to students and to the public.
Periodontal educators or board-certified periodontists with full-time faculty appointments at U.S. institutions are eligible—particularly for the Sunstar‑AAP Research Fellowship
For trainee and early-career awards (e.g., Richman Scholarship, Patel/Levi, Schoor), candidates must be residents or young faculty within ~5 years post-training
The Sunstar Fellowship (~US $50K) must address dental research themes like probiotics, bone/biofilm regeneration, or oral-systemic links
Other awards target specific activities, such as the Richman prize for young investigators, Schoor award for resident manuscripts, and Mellonig award for regeneration-based research
Fellowships require a concise but strong research protocol (~5 pages) including defined aims, methodology, and relevance to periodontal health .
Manuscript- or publication-based awards require demonstrable work—e.g., accepted or published papers in regenerative periodontology .
Personal statements (~750 words) should highlight achievements, career goals, and field contributions
For early-career and trainee applicants, success factors include peer-reviewed publications, mentoring experience, and leadership potential .
Strong letters of recommendation are mandatory: two from periodontology professionals and one from a department chair/program director
Testimonials and institutional backing (especially for teaching and mentoring roles) can strengthen your case .
Most awards have a consistent June 1 deadline annually
Be sure to meticulously follow formatting, page limits, and document lists (CV, protocol, letters).

🛠 Pro Tips
Choose the right award based on career stage (trainee, educator, researcher).
Craft a sharp research plan—clear hypotheses, objectives, methodology, and clinical relevance.
Secure strong reference letters—early and informative.
Use your personal statement to illustrate career trajectory and research vision.
Showcase any publications or regenerated outcomes for manuscript awards.
Double-check formatting and deadlines—errors can mean disqualification.
Eligibility is restricted to a predoctoral student or students in a dental school with a periodontal faculty or resident member as a mentor/principal investigator. The dental school does not need to have a postdoctoral periodontal program but the research must be done through their Department of Periodontology. The research and associated research project proposal must be completed prior to their application. The applicant may still submit an application after graduating as long as the research was done while they were predoctoral students. Immediate family members of the AAP Foundation Board of Directors, officers, and selection committee members are not eligible to apply for the fellowship. The award is not to be used to replace support that would have normally been provided by the recipient's institution. The award should be considered a supplement to any salary, stipend or research support.
