Strategic Partnership PhD Scholarships 2025

Danish Diabetes and Endocrine Academy (DDEA)

The Danish Diabetes and Endocrine Academy (DDEA) invites applications for up to four 2/3-financed Strategic Partnership PhD scholarships of 1,100,000 DKK each covering salary and tuition fee for two years during the three year PhD period. Additionally, each PhD scholarship grant includes a travel grant of 100,000 DKK and the opportunity to co-organise a DDEA education and networking activity.

The grants are designed to support and foster transnational strategic partnerships between partners from Denmark and abroad from various sectors and across different fields of research. The grants support both immediate and ongoing transnational collaborative academic research projects, thus establishing new partnerships or strengthening existing partnerships. The grant scheme seeks to harness the unique research capabilities of each partner, facilitate the exchange of knowledge and foster collaborations, particularly for early-career researchers.

Applications can be in any research field within diabetes, metabolism or endocrinology, and applicants can be from both a Danish research institution and from a research institution abroad.

DDEA offers Strategic Partnership PhD scholarships as well as Strategic Partnership Postdoctoral Fellowships (see separate call). Additionally, DDEA offers Visiting Researcher Grants (see separate call), which can support and enhance the strategic partnership. Candidates from the same research entity may apply for all three types of grants (subject to regulations regarding the principal supervisor/investigator (PI) detailed below), and the applications may cover the same overall project or different projects. Please note that all three types of grants must be applied for separately by the candidate who will carry out the project, and that each application will be evaluated separately. The project must be able to proceed independently of whether the other applications are funded. Please also see the specific criteria for application below.

You can apply for only one PhD scholarship per application round across the various DDEA PhD scholarship calls. We reserve the right to reject your application if you do not follow this rule.
Principal supervisors/investigators (PI) can host only one 2/3 DDEA-funded PhD scholar or two-year DDEA-funded postdoctoral fellow at a time. Therefore, PhD applicants must have clarified this with the PI related to their project before applying.
In addition to one 2/3 financed PhD scholar or one two-year postdoctoral fellow, PIs may also host the following types of DDEA-funded grants:
- Clinical postdoctoral fellowships granted in 2023
- Visiting researcher grants
- 50%- or 1/3-funded Industrial PhD Scholarships
- 50%-funded two year Industrial Postdoctoral Fellowships
- 50%-funded two year Strategic Partnership Postdoctoral Fellowships
- 1/3 funded Cross-academy PhD Scholarships
PIs hosting a DDA-funded PhD Scholar or postdoctoral fellow (with a grant from 2018-2022) are eligible to be involved in an application for a DDEA PhD scholarship or postdoctoral fellowship.

Eligibility Requirements

In order to apply for a 2/3-financed Strategic Partnership PhD scholarship, the following requirements must be fulfilled:

Only PhD candidates may apply for a PhD scholarship. We encourage both candidates affiliated with a Danish research institution and candidates affiliated with research institutions abroad to apply.
You must have a Master’s degree from a Danish university or an equivalent degree from a foreign university (approved by Danish Agency for Science and Higher Education) by the time of application*.
You must not already be enrolled as a PhD student at the time of receiving the grant notification letter (26 November 2025). This means that already enrolled PhD students cannot apply for or obtain funding from DDEA. We reserve the right to check with the relevant institution whether you are enrolled as a PhD student.
Your principal supervisor must be employed at the faculty of the Danish university or the university abroad at which you apply for enrolment and must conduct research as an associate professor or professor within the subject studied by you. If your principal supervisor is from abroad, your co-supervisor must be employed at the Danish research institution where you will conduct part of your research.
For some part of your PhD scholarship, you must be employed at a Danish university or research institution. Please also consult our Funding Terms.
