Söderström Foundation - Königska Nursing Home

svenska lakaresallskapet

Application period September 1 - October 1, 2025

For research in psychiatry & psychiatric knowledge development

The foundation has its origins in the will of wholesaler Carl Christian Söderström on June 23, 1904.

The foundation's income is intended to promote scientific research in psychiatry and it primarily awards grants to research projects that promote the development of psychiatric knowledge (general psychiatry, child and adolescent psychiatry, geriatric psychiatry and forensic psychiatry).

The board will give great importance to the benefit to patients with mental illness and to research that highlights the special situation of women in psychiatry. Low priority will be given to applications with an animal experimental focus.

In this year's application round, you can apply for project grants and/or postdoctoral support from the foundation.

The application can be written in Swedish or English, but the summary must be in Swedish.

Project grant

Competence

The applicant must have completed their doctoral degree no more than ten years ago. Deductions for parental leave may be made.

Terms

The complete research program is written directly in the application form.  The CV must be posted on the person card in the application system.  If a grant is applied for for personnel, the personnel category and period of employment must be stated in the application.  The funds can be used for materials, equipment and personnel costs.  Compensation for the applicant's salary is not granted . Historically, the foundation has usually granted grants of up to SEK 500,000.

The applicant can only submit one application per application period. Renewed applications must be submitted annually and contain a scientific report on the previous year's contributions, including a list of published works within the project. Grants can be received a maximum of five times per applicant. A prerequisite for being granted new grants is that previous grants from the foundation have been reported.

For studies where applicable, such as intervention studies, systematic reviews and registry studies, quality is assessed based on, among other things, clearly formulated hypotheses, adequate power calculation, summary statistical analysis plan and pre-registration (for example on clinicaltrials.gov or Open Science Framework). The applicant is asked to link to the study registration, or alternatively provide an explanation why it is not pre-registered.
For more detailed information on pre-registration, please refer to: https://help.osf.io/article/330-welcome-to-registrations .

Granting & accounting

Notification of received support will be provided at the end of December. Project grants must always be requested from and managed by the university or authority where the applicant conducts their research. For payment of project grants, a register number and decision date from the ethics review board are required. If ethics review is not applicable to the project, this must be stated in the application. Grants must be requested no later than 6 months after the decision date. Funds that are not requested on time will be returned to the foundation. Grants must be used no later than 18 months after the decision date. Extended disposal time can only be granted if there are exceptional reasons and the request must be made before the expiration date has expired. A maximum of 12 months of extension can be granted. The grant must be reported no later than two years after the decision date, when a report containing scientific and economic documentation must be prepared. The reporting is done electronically in the application system. Publications must state that support has come from "The Söderström König Foundation".

The CV must be posted on the personal card in the application system. A prerequisite for being granted support is that any previous grants from the foundation have been reported.

AI Based Application Success Predictor

🎯 1. Stronger Career Pathways for Clinician-Researchers

SLS highlights a critical gap: too few doctors continue research after their PhD, leading to a shortage of experienced supervisors .

Applications are stronger when tied to structured clinician-researcher roles, e.g., part-time clinical/academic positions, combined appointments, or mentorship with experienced faculty .

💊 2. Patient-Centered, Clinically Anchored Research

Proposals must clearly articulate how they address patient care or clinical questions within Swedish healthcare .

For travel or theses stipends, there must be a direct link to clinical relevance, conference presentation, research visit, or structured training.

🧪 3. Scientific Rigor & Feasibility

High-quality methods, robust design, and concrete premises like patient recruitment and ethical approval are essential .

Applicants need to show clear infrastructure, resources, and feasibility in terms of clinical integration.

👥 4. Track Record & Clinical Integration

Demonstrating qualifications—such as publications, experience, and formal integration into clinical practice—is critical .

Leadership and collaboration—especially combined clinical-research roles—are highly valued.

🤝 5. Institutional Membership & Endorsement

Applicants must be current members of SLS or affiliated local medical societies .

Institutional approval via the ResearchWeb portal is required, along with mentor letters and signed project plans.

📅 6. Adherence to Application Windows

Calls are published with strict cycles (typically September–February), and manual late submissions are not accepted

Travel grants must be submitted at least two months before the event or research visit.

🌐 7. Supporting National Agendas & Interdisciplinarity

SLS encourages proposals aligned with national health objectives and the SDGs, such as climate-health, treatment research, and reducing inequality .

Interdisciplinary projects that bridge clinical practice with public health or policy are valued.

Ensure SLS membership and institutional endorsements (ResearchWeb entries).

Follow call timelines, especially for project vs. travel grants.

Embrace interdisciplinarity and policy relevance, referencing climate, equity, or SDG alignment.
