Radiology - Resident/Fellow Research Grant

Radiological Society of North America(RSNA)

This R&E Foundation grant gives young radiologists the chance to gain insight and experience in scientific investigation while they’re still in training. Our funding supports them as they learn research techniques and methods early, and sets recipients up for careers in academic radiologic science.

Application cycle open

We are currently accepting applications for the 2025–26 Resident/Fellow Research Grant!

Application deadline: Jan. 24, 2025

Nature of projects

Any area of research in the radiologic sciences is eligible for funding. However, this grant is not intended to support those who are simply trying to gain practical experience in clinical radiology or fund PhD post-doc projects.

Qualifying areas of research may include the following:

  • Hypothesis-driven basic science
  • Clinical investigation
  • Drug, device or therapy development
  • Comparative effectiveness
  • Evidence-based radiology
  • Ethics and professionalism
  • Quality improvement
  • Clinical practice efficiency
  • Imaging informatics

Please note, though any of the above topics are accepted, projects focused on advancing imaging science, developing or evaluating medical imaging technology, or making innovative use of imaging science to answer important biologic or clinical questions are encouraged.

Award amount

Resident grant recipients receive up to $50,000 fellow grant recipients receive up to $75,000 for research projects. Funds may be used for salary support or non-personnel research expenses.

Any resident or fellow may apply for this grant, as long as you are an RSNA member. If you’re a non dues-paying member, your scientific advisor or your co-investigator must be a dues-paying member. You must also meet the following criteria:

Questions and Answers

Commonly asked questions about this funding opportunity from the host and other attendees.

Which grants am I eligible for?

Research grants are specific to your level of training. Generally, the name of the grant directly references who is eligible to apply (i.e. the Medical Student Research Grant is for medical students only). The Research Seed and Research Scholar grants are for full-time faculty. Most education grants are for any RSNA member. For the RSNA/AUR/APDR/SCARD Radiology Education Research Development Grant, you must hold a position in a radiology department. If you’re unsure you qualify for a grant, contact Ro Ortiz at rortiz@rsna.org or call 1-630-590-7789, before beginning the application process.
It all depends on the amount of time you have available and how long you’ve held a faculty position at an educational institution. The Research Scholar Grant requires more time and more experience. You have to hold a full-time faculty position at the time of application, and be within five to eight years of your initial hire date. Plus, you have to devote 20% effort to your project. The Research Scholar Grant is more flexible. It doesn't require you to hold a faculty position at the time of application, as long as you have one by the time funding starts. Plus, there's no minimum effort requirement.
Yes, you must be an RSNA member at the time of application. If you’re a non dues-paying member (such as a medical student or member-in-training), your scientific advisor or co-investigator must be a dues-paying member. If you’re currently not a member, or your membership has expired, feel free to contact our membership department at membership@rsna.org.
