Are you researching bio-based materials for a fossil-free future? At the "innovate! Academy", we promote interdisciplinary, innovative and high-risk research projects from engineering, natural and material sciences with a strong focus on transfer and provide support on the path from basic research to application.
In 2025, we are focusing on the topic of ‘bio-based materials’, i.e. materials that are produced sustainably from plant, animal or microbial sources. The aim is to replace fossil raw materials such as crude oil with environmentally friendly, sustainable alternatives.
At the the "innovate! Academy", we support exceptional scientists who receive the following benefits:
The exact design of the seminar program is determined by the participants in order to reflect their interests and needs. These are queried as part of the application process. The "innovate! Academy" also provides grantees with a networking platform so that those receiving funding can learn from and support each other on their path from research to practical application.
The application window for the "innovate! Academy" for bio-based materials opens on February 3rd, 2025.
The selection takes place in a two-stage process. First, written application documents are reviewed by a six-member expert panel consisting of representatives from the specialist disciplines and experts in transfer issues. This is followed by a personal interview with the most promising candidates at the Joachim Herz Foundation. Decisions on admission to the "innovate! Academy" will be communicated to the applicants at the end of July with the program starting in October.
The call is aimed at materials scientists, natural scientists and engineering scientist.
We look to support these specific groups:
Applicants should be able to demonstrate entrepreneurial and/or strongly application-oriented thinking, have good communication skills and be interested in exchanging ideas with both researchers from other disciplines as well as social actors.
