Applicants to NEH for awards with expected issuance dates on or after October 1, 2024, should be aware of revisions to the Uniform Administrative Requirements, Cost Principles, and Audit Requirements for Federal Awards (2 CFR Part 200) effective from that date. All NEH awards issued on or after October 1, 2024, will be subject to the revised regulations. You may incorporate these changes into your applications now.

Additional information is available at https://www.neh.gov/grants/manage/2024-Revisions-to-2-CFR-200

The Humanities Connections program seeks to expand the role of the humanities in undergraduate education at two- and four-year institutions by encouraging partnerships between humanities faculty and their counterparts in other areas of study. This page provides an overview of the program. For complete details, including what you must include in your application, consult the Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO). Please note: the attachment requirements have changed slightly since last year.

Humanities Connections projects should plan or implement a curriculum connecting the humanities to one or more non-humanities fields, including but not limited to the physical and natural sciences; pre-service or professional programs, including law and business; or computer science, data science, and other technology-driven fields. Projects must incorporate the approaches and learning activities of both the humanities and the non-humanities disciplines involved.  If your project does not include faculty outside the humanities, you may consider a different grant from the NEH’s Division of Education Programs.

The Humanities Connections program includes two funding levels: Planning and Implementation. Consult the NOFO to see the differences between the two levels and to determine which one is best for your project. You may also contact hc@neh.gov to discuss your project with a program officer.

NEH can review one draft proposal per project. This optional review is not part of the formal selection process and has no bearing on the final funding decision. However, previous applicants have found it useful to strengthen their applications. The draft deadline is July 25, 2024 at 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time. See section D.4 of the NOFO for additional information.

The recorded webinar below provides additional information about the program. We will also hold a live, virtual Q&A at 1:00 pm Eastern on June 27, 2024. Click here to join the meeting, or call in (audio only): +1 202-600-8430 Meeting code: 403 573 484#

Office Hour: An opportunity to ask NEH staff any last-minute questions before the optional draft deadline.

Competitive Humanities Connections proposals will demonstrate:

  • how your project expands the role of the humanities in your institution’s undergraduate curriculum;
  • how your proposed curriculum would substantively and purposefully integrate the subject matter, approaches, and learning activities of two or more disciplines (with a minimum of one in and one outside of the humanities);
  • how faculty from each relevant discipline would collaborate to plan, implement, and/or deliver the curriculum;
  • how your institution would sustain the curriculum over the long term, whether through interdisciplinary minors or certificates; curricular pathways such as concentrations within majors or general education programs; or other models appropriate to your institution.
