The Åke Wiberg Foundation supports medical research in Sweden by granting grants to group leaders who have defended their doctoral dissertations within the last ten years and who have developed an independent line of research. The foundation supports projects in both basic and clinical research. An important target group is new research assistants (or equivalent time-limited career positions), who, after defending their dissertations and completing postdoctoral training (preferably abroad), are now establishing a research group to answer an important medical question. Grants are granted to promote the research project and the granted grant can be used for operations, equipment or salaries for employees in the research group. Grants are normally granted in the range of SEK 400,000-600,000 per year. A special grant is also granted annually, called the Åke Wibergs Stora Anslag , which is a three-year grant (1.5 million SEK per year for 3 years; a total of 4.5 million SEK) to the application that is ranked highest in the scientific assessment this year (no separate application is required for this grant). In addition to the research grant, the recipient of the Åke Wibergs Stora Pris also receives funds to organize a conference within their research topic. A list of previous recipients of the Åke Wibergs Million Grant for Medical Research and the regular research grants during the years 2013-2023 can be found under PREVIOUS GRANT RECIPIENTS .
For research grants in medicine, the following applies in general:
researchers who already have an individual grant of over 1 million SEK/year or a total grant portfolio of over 3 million SEK/year at the time of a first-time application (net of grant to own salary) are not eligible to apply for a grant from the Åke Wiberg Foundation (this restriction does not apply to an application for a renewed grant for year 2 or 3 after a previously granted grant). The purpose of this restriction is for the foundation to focus on the early phase as an independent researcher, before a researcher has reached the point where they have received large individual grants from other funders.
