Research Award Description
As a result of funding constraints at the NIH, occasions arise in which outstanding applicants are favorably reviewed by the NIH but not funded. In an effort to assure that all meritorious PH-related research is supported, and to support the career development of outstanding early career PH-focused researchers, PHA has developed the PHA Early Career Mentored Scientist Award. This PHA Award is to provide support for a PH-focused mentored scientist who has the intent to pursue a career in PH-related research.
Proposals submitted for this PHA Award must be PH-related research projects that have been submitted to and received a favorable review by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) for an NIH Early Career Award (i.e., K award) but cannot be supported by available funds. The purpose of this Award is to support the generation of sufficient preliminary data so that the PH research project is highly competitive in the NIH review process for a resubmission for an early career award.
PHA intends to provide bridge funding with the PHA Early Career Mentored Scientist Award to ensure that the momentum of PH research is not slowed due to NIH budgetary constraints. For this one-year award, the PHA Early Career Mentored Scientist Award offers a temporary mechanism for supporting highly meritorious K-award applicants.
Aligned with PHA’s objective to support diversity, equity, and inclusion in science, a specific focus for this Award is to support outstanding applicants of underrepresented populations in scientific and medical research
Funding Amount
The Award may be approved up to $65,000 for one year. Indirect costs are not allowable.
Review and Award
All applications are evaluated by PHA’s Scientific Leadership Council (SLC) Research Committee whose recommendations are reviewed by the PHA’s Board of Trustees. Funding of awards is based on the priority score awarded to each application and the recommendations of the SLC Research Committee.
As applications for this Award have already been reviewed and scored by an NIH study section, areas of focus by PHA review will include:
· Commitment of the applicant to pursue a career in PH research
· Training environment and mentorship
· Relevance of the proposed study to PH
· Responses to the NIH critiques and the revised research plan to address identified weaknesses
· Potential for future support by the NIH
Primary causes for assigning low priority scores to applications during review include:
· Insufficient information or documentation
· Failure of the applicant to describe the relevance of the proposed study to advance PH research
· Failure of the applicant to address and revise the research plan to address key problems and pitfalls associated with the proposed research
· Failure of the applicant to document the necessary skills or training to accomplish the goals of the proposal
· Failure of the applicant to demonstrate a commitment to pursue a career in PH research
· Failure of the applicant to meet all of the eligibility criteria
An application will be awarded on the basis of individual and institutional merit. The award will not be transferable to another individual or institutions unless previously approved by the Pulmonary Hypertension Association.
· Candidates must be U.S. citizens, permanent residents, or non-residents working in a U.S. based laboratory. Applicants who are not U.S. citizens but are currently based in the U.S. must hold a Visa that spans the project period of the grant.
· The application must have been reviewed by an NIH study section within one (1) year of applying for PHA support.
· Applications must have been submitted to NIH for an Early Career Award such as a K01, K08, K22, K23, KL2, or K99/R00 application.
· The NIH application must be relevant to advance pulmonary hypertensions research.
· If an application has been submitted to NIH multiple times, the most recent submission must be submitted to PHA for consideration.
· The investigator should not be receiving other funding for this work. If other funding is obtained for the research project at any point during the award cycle, the PHA award will be terminated.
· If awarded, a revised application must be submitted to the NIH within one (1) year of receiving the PHA award. Failure to do so will result in the loss of support. Documentation showing resubmission must be provided to PHA as part of the final scientific report.
