Visiting scholars come to The Hastings Center from all over the world to conduct independent research on bioethics. We host scholars and practitioners from academia, medicine, law, and the media, as well as postgraduate students pursuing degrees in the humanities, the sciences, and the professions. The Emily Murray Student Scholarship offers selected undergraduate students the opportunity to pursue independent research in bioethics at The Hastings Center.
The Hastings Center is located in a mid-19th century country house overlooking the scenic Hudson River in rural Garrison, N.Y., approximately 50 miles north of New York City. Visiting scholars have access to The Hastings Center’s research library, dining room, kitchen, and lounge weekdays from 9 am-5 pm, and have full access to the Center’s extensive grounds, which are close to excellent hiking trails. Cold Spring, the nearest village, is about three miles north of The Hastings Center and there is hourly local train service between Grand Central Terminal and Garrison.
Most visiting scholars are in residence for two to eight weeks and stay in one of The Hastings Center’s on-site apartments (see accommodations, below). During their residencies, visiting scholars give work-in-progress presentations and other informal lunchtime talks on their research, and receive feedback from The Hasting Center’s research scholars. Visiting scholars are also welcome to observe Hastings Center research project meetings that take place while they are in residence and to participate in lunchtime talks given by other visiting scholars or by staff research scholars.
