The National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD) is issuing this Notice of Special Interest (NOSI) to stimulate research in areas regarding the health of women within the scope of NIDCD’s mission. NIDCD's mission is to conduct and support research and research training in the normal and disordered processes of hearing, balance, taste, smell, voice, speech, and language. As noted in the recently issued 2023–2027 NIDCD Strategic Plan ( 2023-2027 NIDCD Strategic Plan | NIDCD ), research projects to improve the health of women covering the lifespan are encouraged across all the NIDCD mission areas. These projects may include biological studies which may incorporate anatomical, structural, hormonal, or genetic aspects, behavioral traits, societal aspects, or healthcare related activities that may benefit a women's quality of life.
Communication disorders can have a significant impact on women’s overall health and well-being affecting their ability to engage in daily activities, participate in society and immerse in the workforce. Because communication disorders can affect the physical, emotional, social, recreational, educational, and vocational aspects of life, women may experience health disparities due to one of any combination of these conditions which can impact quality of life. The goal of this NOSI is to stimulate research focused on the health of women within the NIDCD mission areas.
To better understand these issues and to develop effective interventions, NIDCD is seeking research applications that focus on the intersection between the health of women and their ability to hear, maintain balance, taste, smell, use of their voice, produce and understand speech and language across all ages, geographic distributions, ethnicities, race, and socioeconomic status. This may include studies that investigate the underlying causes of these health states, their impact on women’s health and well-being, and strategies for preventing, mitigating, or treating these conditions in women.
