Eligibility Requirements

Applicants must hold a faculty appointment as a tenure-track assistant professor (or higher rank) at the time of award activation. If not, documentation from their institution must accompany the Letter of Intent indicating they will hold the position of assistant professor (or higher rank) by the time of award activation.
The grant will be awarded to a scientist who describes an extraordinarily novel, yet practical research plan that is creative and technically sophisticated.
Selected projects that meet their 12 and 24 month milestones may be eligible for follow-on funding that will enable the established proof-of-concept technology to be developed into a methodology that improves

1. Does CRI allow for a single application from a collaborative team with multiple PIs?

• CRI requires that every application have a single PI who will have full responsibility and authority for the project and who will be responsible for all financial and scientific reporting. Others that are making significant contributions are to be listed as CoInvestigators. All are considered key personnel and should include their curriculum vitae or NIH biosketch.

2. My academic rank is the equivalent of an assistant professor, can I still apply?

• If the institution in which you are applying from considers your current academic rank the equivalent of an assistant professor or higher, you are still eligible to apply.

3. Can a grant be awarded to a candidate at a foreign institution?

• Yes, candidates from both U.S. and non-U.S. institutions are eligible to apply, provided that the institution is a non-profit entity.

4. Does CRI have a citizenship restriction for its grant programs?

• There are no citizenship restrictions for any of CRI’s grant programs.

5. Does CRI provide feedback on unfunded proposals?

• No, CRI does not provide applicants of unfunded proposals comments or feedback from our reviewers

6. What is CRI’s resubmission policy?

• CRI allows applicants to resubmit an unfunded application for subsequent deadlines following the completion of CRI’s review process. However, CRI does not provide feedback or reviewer comments on applications. New applications should, however, reflect any progress made since the previous submission, with changes to the application highlighted.

7. Is there a limitation of the number of times I can apply for this grant program?

• No, as long as you meet the eligibility requirements you may still apply.

8. Can more than one applicant from the same institution apply for funding?

• Yes, multiple applicants from the same organization may submit proposals to each CRI funding announcement, provided each application is scientifically distinct.

9. Can a PI submit multiple applications to multiple different funding announcements?

• Yes, provided that they are two separate projects. For programs that are project specific (i.e. CLIP and Technology Impact) an applicant cannot submit overlapping proposals to more than one program.

10. Is an IRB/IACUC/IBC approval required at the time of submitting my application?

• No, however, applicants should list on the application “pending” if the protocol has not yet been approved. For applications that involve human subjects, vertebrate animals, recombinant DNA and other nonexempt biohazards, an applicable protocol number would need to be required following the acceptance of the award.
