Conference Support Program

This program provides partial support to mathematical science-based conferences and research schools organized in developing countries. In exceptional cases, the program also supports conferences in developed countries. 

The CDC Conference Support Grant is meant to support conference organizers in covering the following costs for invited speakers and participants from developing countries:

  1. travel expenditures
  2. accommodation expenditures

No other expenses can be covered (including venue rental, meal expenses, etc.)

Application

Applications must include the following:

  1. Curriculum Vitae (CV) of main and co-conference organizers. It must include a selected list of publications. (Max. 3 pages)
  2. Detailed budget that includes a draft of the overall budget of the conference as well as grant requested from the CDC. Applicants cannot apply for more than 4,000 EUR.
  3. A list of invited speakers (Name-University-Country). Please specify those who have accepted the invite.
  4. A detailed scientific program (which includes details of how the conference will be organized: plenary lectures, parallel sessions, etc).
  5. Statement on the relevance of the conference for participating mathematicians from developing countries

Upcoming Deadlines

Completed applications must be sent by the conference organizers by:

  • January 15th, 2025 for conferences starting after May 15th, 2025 (Decisions will be made by March 15th, 2025*)
  • April 15th, 2025 for conferences starting after August 15th, 2025 (Decisions will be made by June 15th, 2025*)
  • July 15th, 2025 for conferences starting after November 15th, 2025 (Decisions will be made by September 15th, 2025*)
  • October 1st, 2025 for conferences starting after February 1st, 2026 (Decisions will be made by November 15th, 2025*)

If your application is not completed by the above stated deadline or you miss the deadline, it cannot be considered for evaluation.

*If decision dates fall on a weekend or public holiday, decisions will be made on the following working day.

Eligibility Criteria

  1. The conference must be related to, if not in, the field of mathematical sciences
  2. The conference must address either a regional or an international audience and should benefit mathematicians from neighboring countries
  3. The selection committee specifically considers only conferences at a research level and cannot support schools or activities which involve professional training
  4. The conference takes place in a developing country. In exceptional cases, conferences taking place in developed countries inviting mathematicians from developing countries may also be accepted. In these instances, conference organizers must match the awarded amount from IMU-CDC with an equivalent amount of funding from other sources to support mathematicians from developing countries.

Grant details

  1. The maximum amount that is awarded is 4,000 EUR. Funds granted are usually in the range of 1,500 EUR - 3,500 EUR.
  2. The funds must be used to cover travel and accommodation costs of invited speakers or participants coming from developing countries only. Applications for entirely or partially online conferences can include expenses for the acquisition of material or payment of services to conduct activities in online format.
  3. The CDC cannot be main sponsor for the conference; conference must be funded through other means (illustrated through the overall conference budget in the application).
  4. This grant cannot support expenditures for meals, venue rental, publication, printing and copying.
  5. Upon conclusion of the conference, an activity and financial report documenting all activities and expenses must be submitted together with invoices and receipts accounting for all expenditure.
  6. Successful applicants cannot reapply for the program before their granted activity has concluded.
  7. In case of postponement/cancellation, grantees and applicants are obliged to inform the IMU-CDC as soon as possible.

Note:

Receipt of the Conference Support grant is subject to the IMU's ability to legally transfer funds to the grantee's (conference organizer or co-organizer) personal bank account.
