Career Development Award

American Society of Clinical Oncology

The Career Development Award (CDA) provides research funding to clinical investigators, who have received their initial faculty appointment, as they work to establish an independent clinical cancer research program. This is a mentored award and the research project is conducted under the guidance of an experienced mentor in the proposed research area. The research must have a patient-oriented focus, including a clinical research study and/or translational research involving human subjects. Proposals with a predominant focus on in vitro or animal studies (even if clinically relevant) are not allowed. Applications in all areas of cancer research are accepted from U.S. and international applicants.

Applicants must meet the following criteria to qualify for a CDA:

  • Be a physician (MD, DO or international equivalent) working in any country.
  • Be in the first to fourth year of a full-time primary faculty appointment in a clinical department at an academic medical institution at the time of grant submission. Application must be submitted before the applicant has had four full years as faculty. Faculty appointment may begin with the entry-level faculty position within the applicant’s institution (i.e., Instructor/Lecturer, Assistant Professor, Assistant Member).
  • Have a valid, active medical license in the country where the research will be conducted at the time of application.
  • Have completed productive postdoctoral research and demonstrated the ability to undertake independent investigator-initiated clinical research.
  • Be an ASCO member or have submitted a membership application with the grant application. To apply for new membership, or to renew an existing membership, go to asco.org/membership.
  • Be able to commit at least 50% of full-time effort in research (applies to total research, not just the proposed project) during the award period.
  • Have a mentor from the sponsoring institution who must provide a letter of support. If the mentor is not an ASCO Member, a supporting letter from an ASCO Member from the sponsoring institution must be included.
  • Be up-to-date and in compliance with all requirements (e.g., progress reports, final reports, budget summaries, IRB approvals, etc.) of any past grants received from Conquer Cancer. Eligible applicants are allowed to hold only one active grant from Conquer Cancer at a time.
  • Applicants with concurrent federal career development awards (e.g., K23, K08, or any other type of career development award) and institutional training grants (T32, KL2/K12 or equivalent) are eligible to apply provided there are no scientific and budgetary overlaps.
  • Applicants may not concurrently hold other career development awards from private foundations during the CDA-supported project term.
  • Past recipients of training fellowships (e.g., Young Investigator Award or an F32 grant) are eligible to apply.
  • Applicants should not have been a Principal Investigator on any large project grants (e.g., R01 or international equivalent).

Questions and Answers

Commonly asked questions about this funding opportunity from the host and other attendees.

Does Conquer Cancer fund non-US based applicants and institutions?

Yes, most of our programs are open to international applicants and institutions with a non-profit status. Visit our Funding Opportunities page for more information.
No. We do not accept or review unsolicited proposals.
Yes, unless noted in the Request for Proposal of a specific grant. The allowable overhead/indirect cost is included in the RFP of the program.
All applications must be submitted through the ASCO and Conquer Cancer Application Portal. Please do not mail or email any applications directly to Conquer Cancer, they will not be accepted.
The applications are reviewed by the Conquer Cancer Grants Selection Committee using a multi- stage review process. First each application is assigned to two scientific reviewers who are leaders in their areas of expertise for independent and confidential scientific review. A cutoff is drawn after scientific review and applications with high scientific merits are further reviewed by a biostatistician reviewer and a patient advocate reviewer. Top scoring applications are then advanced to the final review stage for further discussion and evaluation by the entire review committee. The applications are evaluated and scored using the 1-9 NIH scoring scale.
Some Conquer Cancer grants and awards are supported by companies required to report to CMS under the Physician Payments Sunshine Act. Each of the supporting companies must make its own determination of what it must report to comply with the Sunshine Act. Those payments that are determined to be reportable will be published on the public Open Payments website, including the name of the physician recipient and each payment associated with the total amount of the grant. The Sunshine Act requires that all reportable payments or transfers made starting August 1, 2013 be reported to CMS. To assist Conquer Cancer in complying with its reporting obligations to its supporters, grant recipients will be asked to provide the following information to Conquer Cancer: State of License; State License Number; and National Provider Identifier (NPI) Number. The obligation for Conquer Cancer is to provide this data to the supporting companies based on language in the letters of agreement for this support.
No, each applicant may submit only one proposal or application for the same award in a given funding cycle.
