This grant provides support to members to facilitate their attendance at scientific conferences and seminars in the UK and around the world. You can apply for this grant online via our membership portal.
Applications are considered four times per year. The upcoming deadlines are as follows:

The outcome of applications will be sent via email to all applicants three to four weeks after the application deadline of the round that has been applied for. We recommend you apply for the award with the application deadline at least five to six weeks ahead of your conference. Please note, that travel must be completed within one year of the award date.
Maximum awards are currently as follows: £500 for travel within the UK; £700 for European travel and £1,000 for the rest of the world.
These rates are based on UK applicants, if you are an overseas applicant the rates will be applied according to your place of residence, for example, £500 if travelling within your home country. Please contact us if you have any queries.
You must be a current BSI member, with a UK institution and home address, and have held membership for at least 9–12 months prior to applying
Specific schemes may require additional career-stage criteria:
Career Enhancing Grants: members without faculty roles or ≤15 years post-BSc.
Conference Travel Grants: open to early-career, postgraduate, or full members depending on the scheme .
Career Enhancing Grants (£100–5,000): fund diverse career-building activities—pilot data, training, lab visits, equipment, or secondments
Conference Travel Grants (up to £250): support active participation (poster/talk) and require supervisor support
Other schemes include Communication & Engagement Grants, Equality/Diversity & Inclusion Grants, Carer Grants, and larger mid-career Research Excellence Awards .
Grant panels assess:
Personal benefit and career impact (workshops, data, skills, collaborations)
Scientific value—supporting quality pilot work or development
Mid-senior awards (e.g., Immunology Research Excellence) prioritize high-impact research, funding track record, mentorship, and sector-wide influence .
For travel grants:
Show active involvement (poster/talk accepted).
Provide a support letter from supervisor/head outlining need and benefit
For career grants:
If funding exceeds £1,000, include letters—either from host institution for training or supervisor for developmental activities
Justify the requested sum: explain why the amount suits the activity and your current funding landscape .
Demonstrate that funds will be used to leverage further opportunities (e.g., pilot data leading to larger grants).
BSI prioritizes EDI initiatives and outreach programs.
Communication & Engagement Grants fund public-facing immunology projects, while EDI Activity Grants support diversity-driven actions
All schemes require endorsement from your supervisor or head of department to confirm value and need—vital for credibility
Grants are strictly deadline-driven, with two annual rounds (March & September).
Applications must be complete—including CV, letters, and correctly formatted forms—and applicants should only apply to one scheme per round per type
