They can also be used by PhD candidates and their potential supervisors to evaluate the scientific and personal fit before the start of a PhD project in another country by funding a research stay of one to three months in the supervisor’s laboratory.

Eligibility Requirements

Applicants for a Boehringer Ingelheim Fonds (BIF) travel grant must currently pursue an experimental project in basic biomedical research aimed at elucidating basic biological phenomena of human life and acquiring new scientific knowledge.

We fund PhD students or medical students during their doctoral thesis as well as postdocs. In addition, we support research visits of graduates who have applied for a PhD project abroad, but who have not yet worked with their potential PhD supervisor and not yet obtained a Phd position (hereafter called PhD candidates).

We award travel grants to European citizens working in Europe and overseas, and to non-European citizens who perform their MD, PhD or postdoctoral project in Europe, or will use the travel grant to work in Europe.

Which nationalities are supported?

We support European citizens working in Europe and overseas, and non-European citizens who perform their MD, PhD, or postdoctoral project in Europe, or will use the travel grant to work in Europe. We define Europe geographically, which means the UK and the following states of the former Soviet Union (Belarus, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, the Republic of Moldova, the Russian Federation and Ukraine) are included. Turkey and Israel are also treated as belonging to Europe. Applicants with European citizenship must have at least pursued their secondary school or university education in Europe, in order to be considered as European by the BIF. The latter also applies to candidates with dual citizenship. If you are unsure whether you are eligible to apply, please contact us.

Is there an application deadline?

Applications for travel grants may be submitted at any time, but must reach the Boehringer Ingelheim Fonds (BIF) at the latest six weeks prior, but not earlier than six months before your proposed departure date.

Does the travel grant include registration fees for courses?

Are there exceptions to the rule about the maximum period between university entrance qualification and anticipated start of the travel grant in the host laboratory?

Exceptions can be made in certain cases (e.g. children, prolonged illness, apprenticeship prior to first university studies) after consultation with the Boehringer Ingelheim Fonds.
