Application period December 1, 2025 - February 1, 2026
For research into ALS and similar neurological diseases
The fund's returns support research into ALS and similar/related neurological diseases.
Competence
Eligible to apply are doctors with a doctorate and membership in the Swedish Medical Association. Doctorate held no more than 10 years ago, deductions for parental leave can be made in the application.
Membership fees for 2025 must be paid and received by February 1, 2025. CV must be posted on the personal card.
If you belong to one of the SLS member associations and are applying, you do not pay a membership fee to SLS. This is instead handled by your association.
On "Mina sidor" you can get information about your membership and manage payment of membership fees via invoice if you are not a member of an association.
NOTE! Members affiliated with an association do not have access to "Mina sidor".
Terms
The same rules apply as for project applications to the Swedish Medical Association's funds. The project plan must cover two years. The application must present a research plan and patient benefit under the headings question, method, work plan, significance and the clinical relevance or anchoring of the project. The applicant's independence and responsibility in the project must be clearly stated. The need for user participation must be considered and discussed and, where applicable, described in the application.
The application must state whether ethical approval is available or will be sought. The file number and decision date from the ethics review board must be stated and if ethics review is not applicable to the project, this must be stated in a separate box. SLS assumes that the necessary ethical approvals are available and if ethical approval is not granted, the grant must be repaid. The researcher is responsible for ensuring that reimbursement is made if ethical approval is not granted.
Applicants can only submit one application per application period. Multiple applications from the same institution cannot count towards funding for similar research projects.
Appropriation
The project must be feasible within a period of two to three years and within a budget of the order of SEK 500,000 per year. The budget for the project must be stated. If the applicant receives significant funding from another funding source, this must be stated. Previously received project funding from SLS must be used up and reported (in the respective application) when a new application is made. This is a prerequisite for a new grant to be granted.
Project grants can be received a maximum of five times, and the funds can be used for materials, equipment and personnel costs. Compensation for salaries to applicants is not granted. Project grants must always be managed by the university or, where applicable, another authority, where the applicant conducts their research. The grant amount therefore includes administrative costs, etc. charged by the universities.
Granting & accounting
Notification of the grant will be made in late June. It will be clear from the decision whether a one-year or two-year grant has been granted. The conditions for the grant are stated in the decision commentary.
Project funding must be requested in the same calendar year as it was granted, i.e. no later than December 31 of the application year.
One-year grants must be fully used and accounting must be included in the application no later than two years after the decision on the grant received.
Two-year grants must be fully used and accounting must be included in the application no later than three years after the decision date. The conditions for the grant are stated in the decision commentary.
Extended disposal time can only be granted if there are exceptional reasons and the request must be made before the expiration date. A maximum of one year extension can be granted. Publications must state that support has come from the Björklund Fund.
SLS highlights a critical gap: too few doctors continue research after their PhD, leading to a shortage of experienced supervisors .
Applications are stronger when tied to structured clinician-researcher roles, e.g., part-time clinical/academic positions, combined appointments, or mentorship with experienced faculty .
Proposals must clearly articulate how they address patient care or clinical questions within Swedish healthcare .
For travel or theses stipends, there must be a direct link to clinical relevance, conference presentation, research visit, or structured training.
High-quality methods, robust design, and concrete premises like patient recruitment and ethical approval are essential .
Applicants need to show clear infrastructure, resources, and feasibility in terms of clinical integration.
Demonstrating qualifications—such as publications, experience, and formal integration into clinical practice—is critical .
Leadership and collaboration—especially combined clinical-research roles—are highly valued.
Applicants must be current members of SLS or affiliated local medical societies .
Institutional approval via the ResearchWeb portal is required, along with mentor letters and signed project plans.
Calls are published with strict cycles (typically September–February), and manual late submissions are not accepted.
Travel grants must be submitted at least two months before the event or research visit.
SLS encourages proposals aligned with national health objectives and the SDGs, such as climate-health, treatment research, and reducing inequality .
Interdisciplinary projects that bridge clinical practice with public health or policy are valued.
