The Beckman Young Investigator (BYI) Program provides research support to the most promising young faculty members in the early stages of their academic careers in the chemical and life sciences, particularly to foster the invention of methods, instruments and materials that will open up new avenues of research in science.
Projects are normally funded for a period of four years. Grants are in the range of $600,000 ($150,000 annually) over the term of the project, contingent upon demonstrated progress after the second year of the award.
BYI supports promising young faculty (typically within 10 years of PhD) who lead bold, departure-from-current-direction research in the chemical or life sciences .
Arnold O. Beckman Postdoctoral Fellowships also support early-career scholars transitioning to independence .
Proposals must represent innovative, disruptive ideas with potential to pioneer new methods, instruments, or research domains—not incremental extensions .
Those that cut across disciplines, spawning new research avenues, are strongly favored .
BYI eligibility requires applicants to have not yet received major external funding—those already backed by large awards are typically disqualified .
Since 2020, BYI LOIs are blinded—reviewers see only anonymized scientific content to mitigate bias. This has notably increased equity, reducing institutional prestige bias .
Grants (e.g., $600K over four years) are contingent upon midterm progress evaluations, ensuring ongoing accountability .
The Beckman Postdoctoral Fellowships fund outstanding scholars (14 fellows in 2025, totaling $4.3M) .
The Beckman Scholars Program supports undergrads at 14 institutions in 2025 with $2.1M in total .
BYI alumni include Nobel Laureates Jennifer Doudna and Carolyn Bertozzi—and many are NAS members—highlighting prestige and future impact .
✅ Summary Table
Predictor | What It Means |
---|---|
Early-career independence | Faculty or transitioning postdocs ready to lead their own lab |
High-risk innovation | Cutting-edge, cross-disciplinary proposals opening new fields |
Minimal prior funding | Focus on researchers without major grants |
Blinded review equity | Strong scientific ideas selected without bias |
Progress milestones | Grant success tied to measurable midterm outcomes |
Diverse fellowship support | Includes postdocs and undergrads to sustain pipeline |
Elite alumni | Fellowship history predicts high future impact |
💡 Recommendations for Applicants
Position yourself as early-career and independent, but not yet heavily funded.
Craft a bold, disruptive project that challenges existing paradigms.
Keep LOIs anonymous: omit identifying info (name, institution, pronouns).
Plan for midterm evaluation: set clear milestones and metrics.
Engage with their broader programs: postdoc or scholar funding can build your profile.
Highlight innovation potential: reviewers reward interdisciplinary, generative ideas.
Early Tenure-Track
The BYI program is open to those within the first four years of a tenure-track position, or an equivalent independent research appointment, at a United States academic or non-profit institution that conducts research in chemical and life sciences.
Tenure-Track dates for the 2026 program must start after 1/1/2021, and on or before 8/1/2025.
US Citizenship
Persons who have applied for permanent residency but have not received their government documentation are eligible to apply; Applicants must be citizens or permanent residents of the United States prior to the BYI Interview (late March/ early April) to remain eligible. Applicants with conditional permanent residency who have received Form I-797 are eligible to apply. See the application for more information.
External Funding
Applicants can have no more than $225,000 in direct, annualized external funding grants during any BYI Program Year (Aug-July) at time of LOI application due date and Full Application due date (if invited). Start-up funds, department-wide instrumentation grants, and "Transition" grants received as a postdoc (such as NIH K99/R00) are not counted toward this total.
Clinical Research
The Foundation does not support clinical research, clinical trials, or single-target drug discovery projects. Individuals with strictly clinical appointments are not eligible to apply.
Time Frame
Applicants must have no more than 10 years post-terminal degree; and no more than 5 years experience in a non-tenure track (not including postdoc position) or industry position. For example, post-terminal degrees received in any month of 2015 are eligible to apply in August 2025 for the 2026 program; similarly, for non-tenure track or industry positions that occurred in 2020, they are eligible to apply in August 2025 for the 2026 program.
Repeat Applications
No individual may apply for a Beckman Young Investigator award more than two times (including submitting a Letter of Intent).
Institutional Requirements
Government laboratories, such as NIH or federally funded national laboratories are not eligible institutions.
Institutions are not limited in the number of applicants who apply at the Letter of Intent stage.
Institutions with a currently funded BYI are eligible for award consideration.
