AOA/AOF new investigator research grant program

American Osteopathic Foundation

The objective of this multi-year grant is to advance the scientific training of new investigators by providing funding for research projects. A New investigator is defined as a Principal Investigator (PI) who has completed his/her terminal research degree or end of post-graduate clinical training,
whichever date is later, within the past 10 years.

Research projects considered for this program may be clinical, interventional, and/or translational research with a clear clinical relevance to osteopathic distinctiveness. Additionally, the AOA and AOF seek to encourage individuals to aspire to conduct and contribute to osteopathic research throughout their careers.

FUNDING OPPORTUNITY & REQUIREMENTS

With guidance from the AOA Bureau of Osteopathic Research and Public Health (BORPH), the AOA has collaborated with the AOF to make funding available funding for projects designed to assess the osteopathic approach and address one of the specific research focus areas listed below.
• All proposals must incorporate and address the osteopathic approach.
The Osteopathic Approach is based on the tenets of osteopathic medicine. The osteopathic tenets are a foundation of the osteopathic profession from which emerges the osteopathic philosophy of the holistic approach to care by helping patients be truly healthy in body, mind and spirit — not just free of symptoms. The tenets of osteopathic medicine are defined as follows:
(1) The body is a unit; the person is a unity of body, mind and spirit.
(2) The body is capable of self-regulation, self-healing, and health maintenance.
(3) Structure and function are reciprocally interrelated.
(4) Rational treatment is based upon an understanding of the basic principles of body unity, self-regulation and the interrelationship of structure and function.
