This program is designed as a mechanism for supporting the research training of the applicant and will enable the applicant to conduct a clinical, interventional, and/or translational research project with a clear clinical relevance to osteopathic distinctiveness that will make a significant
contribution to osteopathic medicine. Additionally, this program seeks to introduce osteopathic medical students to the osteopathic research community and encourage them to implement research throughout their career. The program involves the completion of a grant proposal under the direction of a mentor. The mentor should be an active investigator in the area of the proposed research and be committed both to the career development of the applicant and to the direct supervision of the
applicant’s research. Both the mentor and the applicant must accept responsibility for the conduct of the project and the reporting of the scientific results. A portion of the research-training program may be conducted at an institution other than the sponsoring institution. The sponsoring
institution, however, must have obtained the services of a consultant who will offer on-site supervision of that portion of the grant proposal, which is not completed at the sponsoring institution.
FUNDING OPPORTUNITY & REQUIREMENTS
The AOA and, with the guidance from the AOA Bureau of Osteopathic Research and Public Health (BORPH), has available funding for projects designed to assess the osteopathic approach and address one of the three specific research focus areas listed below.
1. All proposals must incorporate and address the osteopathic approach.
The Osteopathic Approach is based on the tenets of osteopathic medicine. The osteopathic tenets are a foundation of the osteopathic profession from which emerges the osteopathic philosophy of the holistic approach to care by helping patients be truly healthy in body, mind and spirit — not just free of symptoms. The tenets of osteopathic medicine are defined as
follows:
(1) The body is a unit; the person is a unity of body, mind, and spirit.
(2) The body is capable of self-regulation, self-healing and health maintenance.
(3) Structure and function are reciprocally interrelated.
(4) Rational treatment is based upon an understanding of the basic principles of body unity, self-regulation, and the interrelationship of structure and function
2. Specific requirements for the topic and scope of the project per research focus area.
Proposals submitted must comply with the specific requirements for the topic and scope of research projects as set forth in the respective RFAs for the larger research grants.
