The objective of this multi-year grant is to advance the scientific training of new investigators by providing funding for research projects. A New investigator is defined as a Principal Investigator (PI) who has completed his/her terminal research degree or end of post-graduate clinical training,
whichever date is later, within the past 10 years.
Research projects considered for this program may be clinical, interventional, and/or translational research with a clear clinical relevance to osteopathic distinctiveness. Additionally, the AOA and AOF seek to encourage individuals to aspire to conduct and contribute to osteopathic research throughout their careers.
FUNDING OPPORTUNITY & REQUIREMENTS
With guidance from the AOA Bureau of Osteopathic Research and Public Health (BORPH), the AOA has collaborated with the AOF to make funding available funding for projects designed to assess the osteopathic approach and address one of the specific research focus areas listed below.
• All proposals must incorporate and address the osteopathic approach.
The Osteopathic Approach is based on the tenets of osteopathic medicine. The osteopathic tenets are a foundation of the osteopathic profession from which emerges the osteopathic philosophy of the holistic approach to care by helping patients be truly healthy in body, mind and spirit — not just free of symptoms. The tenets of osteopathic medicine are defined as
follows:
(1) The body is a unit; the person is a unity of body, mind and spirit.
(2) The body is capable of self-regulation, self-healing, and health maintenance.
(3) Structure and function are reciprocally interrelated.
(4) Rational treatment is based upon an understanding of the basic principles of body unity, self-regulation and the interrelationship of structure and function.1
• Specific requirements for the topic and scope of the project per research focus area. Proposals submitted must comply with the specific requirements for the topic and scope of research projects as set forth in the respective RFAs for the larger research grants.
1. Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine and Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment(OMM/OMT)
• Exploring the impact of OMM/OMT on relevant disease states. Link to Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine (OMM) RFA/NOFO
2. Acute and Chronic Pain Management
• Applying the osteopathic approach to acute and/or chronic pain management, emphasizing treatments and patient outcomes.
Link to Acute/Chronic Pain Management RFA/NOFO
3. The Impact of the Osteopathic Approach on Chronic Disease
• Applying the osteopathic approach to chronic diseases, elderly care, the cost- effectiveness of osteopathic care in chronic diseases, and/or the impact on the quality of life through the life cycle.
Link to The Impact of the Osteopathic Approach to Chronic Disease RFA/NOFO
4. Osteopathic Distinctiveness.
• Exploring if the osteopathic distinctiveness approach to patient care will translate into better outcomes related to compassion/ empathy, patient/physician provider communication, or patient satisfaction.
Link to Osteopathic Distinctiveness RFA/NOFO
• The research will result in a manuscript submitted to the Journal of Osteopathic Medicine(JOM). The Grantee is required to give the Journal of Osteopathic Medicine (JOM), the official scientific publication of the AOA, first right of refusal on project results generated from this grant.
AOA and AOF has a preference for proposals that: (1) use novel approaches and (2) lead to results/outcomes that could be translated to physician practices. Please note that while the AOA and AOF have a preference for novel projects, they will also support supplemental projects of existing research studies. Supplemental projects must have research questions and specific aims distinct from the existing (parent) study. Applicants will be required to provide information regarding the parent study.
