AGA Fellow Abstract Award

American Gastroenterological Association(AGA)

The objective of the AGA Research Foundation Fellow Abstract Award is to stimulate interest in gastroenterology and hepatology research careers by providing recognition to clinical and postdoctoral fellows with exceptional abstracts accepted by AGA for presentation at DDW. The top scoring abstract is designated the Fellow Abstract of the Year.

This $500 travel award supports recipients who are MD, PhD or equivalent fellows giving abstract-based oral or poster presentations at Digestive Disease Week® (DDW). The top scoring abstract will be designated the Fellow Abstract of the Year and receive a $1,000 award.

Application requirements

  • • Applicants may only submit one abstract for consideration.
  • • Abstracts must have been submitted to, and accepted by, AGA for presentation at DDW.
  • • A copy of the notification from AGA confirming acceptance of the abstract for oral or poster presentation at DDW must be submitted with the application.
  • • Applicants must be first or presenting author of the abstract/oral session. No exceptions are allowed.
  • • Applicants must submit a curriculum vitae or NIH biographical sketch with their application.
  • • Applicants must have a sponsor who is an AGA member in good standing at the time of application submission. 

Award overlap

Applicants who have received any similar travel award to attend DDW using the same abstract submitted to AGA are ineligible for consideration.

Selection criteria

Recipients will be selected based on the significance of the research, clarity of the abstract and contribution of the applicant.

Review process

A selection committee comprising members of the AGA Institute Research Awards Panel will review applications and select the award recipients.

The application deadline is Feb. 22, 2024. Applications must be submitted through the AGA Grants Management System and will not be accepted via mail, fax or email.   • • Applicants must be the first author of an abstract or the designated speaker of an oral presentation accepted by AGA for presentation at DDW.
  • • Applicants must be clinical or postdoctoral fellows with MD, PhD or equivalent degrees at institutions in North America (U.S., Canada and Mexico).

  • • Students and medical residents are ineligible for this award; see AGA Student Abstract Award.
  • • Fellows outside of North America are ineligible for this award; see AGA-Moti L. & Kamla Rustgi International Travel Award.
  • • Applicants who are physician-scientists, female or from racial/ethnic groups underrepresented in biomedical research are strongly encouraged to apply.

Do I need to be an AGA member to apply?

Yes. Applicants must be AGA members in good standing at the time of submission. Please visit AGA’s membership page or call 301-654-2055 for membership information.
All AGA research awards require that applicants have an MD, PhD and/or equivalent degree (e.g., MBChB, MBBS, DO) and a full-time faculty or equivalent position at an institution in North America (United States, Canada or Mexico). Examples of faculty-equivalent positions include research associate, research scientist, and research investigator. Please email awards@gastro.org to verify that your faculty-equivalent position is eligible.
If you are an MD (or equivalent), no more than seven years shall have elapsed following the completion of clinical training (GI fellowship or its equivalent) and the start date of the award you are applying to. If you are a PhD (or equivalent), no more than seven years shall have elapsed following the awarding of the PhD degree and the start date of the award you are applying to.
Proposals must be relevant to digestive or liver diseases. AGA accepts applications across the research spectrum, including basic, translational and clinical research. AGA defines these research categories as follows: Clinical: Research involving direct contact with human subjects or using clinical data to address problems related to the prevention, diagnosis treatment or outcome of human diseases (e.g., clinical epidemiology). This category also includes research related to health care delivery (e.g., health services, health IT). Basic/translational: Research with the primary goal of understanding basic biology or disease mechanisms. This category can involve animal subjects, cell culture, human biospecimens or human data as resources for laboratory- or informatics-based investigation.
A sponsor takes responsibility for the quality assessment of the proposed research, the quality of the research environment the project will be conducted in, and the credentials of the principal investigator and other key researchers/staff involved in the project.A mentor supervises the principal investigator’s research activities. In the Personal Statement section of their biosketch, the mentor should note their relationship with the principal investigator and the proposed research project.
The research plan should include three distinct sections: Significance, Innovation and Approach (including preliminary data). The research plan should include sufficient information needed for evaluation of the project independent of any other document. Be specific, informative and succinct.
Yes. If you are an early-career investigator at the instructor or assistant professor level (or equivalent), a letter of recommendation from your division chief or department chair is required for Research Scholar Awards, Pilot Research Awards, and other specialty awards. Please see the Requirements section within the criterion for your specific award of interest for additional guidelines.
